The first Christmas my sisters boyfriend spent with out family two years ago he unabashedly tried to win me over by gifting me with a four pack of beer from Bellwoods. I had never tried anything from Bellwoods but Jakub did some research on the craft beer market in his hometown of Toronto and provided me with the most memorable gift of the entire year (sorry dad!)
Bellwoods Brewery has two locations in Toronto churning out small batches of beer. Bellwoods lineup contains many core beers (such as Witchshark, Jelly King, Skeleton Key, Barn Owl), and the !00% Wheat line, which I am reviewing today) which the Brewmasters continue to develop new versions of. Cat Lady IPA, Goblin Sauce, and the Raspberry Jelly King are some of the best beers I have tried over the last year.
Today I am reviewing: 100% Wheat Pale Ale W/ Hallertau (Mittelfruher + Tradition), Tellnanger & Simcoe. This is one of a long line of the 100% Wheat Pale Ale line which all consist of absolutely no barley. This particular version is noted to have lemon and orange notes and I am happy to announce that both flavours come through strongly both in scent and flavour.
The beer pours out a very light, hazy wheat colour with a small head that dissipates gradually. This is by fat the lightest beer I have tried from Bellwoods, coming in only at 4% abv. The flavour is quite mild and refreshing, reminiscent of a summer beer.
This beer is successful as a lighter pale ale, and the various citrus notes are delicious, however overall I find the beer to be somewhat bland and forgettable. While I would never say this was a bad beer Bellwoods has so many better beers to try.
