Refined Fool Brewing Co. is the quintessential craft brewery. As a self-described nano-brewery hailing from Sarnia, Ontario, the fine folks at Refined Fool grew their business from a home brew operation into a full business.

I found Short Pier, Long Walk Double IPA at my local liquor store in Kitchener, Ontario, nearly 2 hours away, which shows their reach.

The 650 mL bottle is a very classic, unassuming black, red, and white. What caught my eye was the 100+ IBU count right on the front of the label. It is clear that Refined Fool wanted to target hop-heads like myself, and I’m glad that they did.

The pour was a very nicely unfiltered, warm orange colour, with a lot of foam. Once the foam settled, I was shocked at how well-balanced this 8.4% bitter, hoppy brew finished.

If I was doing a blind taste test, I would have pegged this at about half the posted ABV, which makes this a dangerously drinkable double IPA. All of the flavours arising from the hops profile blend well together, without being overbearing.

It had a nice floral, pine, and citrus blend, which did not sit heavy at all.

I found this particular beer at the right time, with the weather shifting to autumn. I tend to enjoy hops most in the fall months, but that being said, I could see myself enjoying this particular brew year-round.

While this would be likely to satisfy even the more hardcore hops purists, it would also be a good introduction for those looking to experiment with hoppier pours.

The Bar of Ontario isn’t the only bar to which he’s been called. Misses drinking at the SkyDome. Enjoying Waterloo Region one (sometimes two) craft beer at a time. Favourite beers: anything hoppy enough to jump off the table.
